Character actor Peter Boyle, a fixture in both cult and mainstream movies since the seventies, died yesterday of heart disease, it has been announced. After giving up the life of a monk, he became an actor and after a few bit parts he starred in the title role of Joe and never looked back. During the 70s he appeared in such variably subversive works as T.R. Baskin, The Candidate, Steelyard Blues, Slither, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Kid Blue and his most famous film role, the Monster in Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein.
He followed that with a Joe-like turn in Taxi Driver, Hardcore, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure, Where the Buffalo Roam, Outland, Hammett, Yellowbeard, Walker, and The Dream Team, then suffered a stroke in 1990 that left him unable to speak for six months. However, he bounced back, appearing in Honeymoon in Vegas, Malcolm X, The Shadow, The Santa Clause movies, While You Were Sleeping, Species II, Monster's Ball, and Scooby Doo 2. On television he'll be remembered for his Emmy-winning role in The X-Files and the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. |
