A newly married couple move into an ancient house in Bangkok and acquire an antique bone brooch, along with the ghostly Mae Nak (Mother Nak). At first, she protects them from any unscrupulous visitors. However, in time, it’s clear that she expects a deadly favour in return. And when the groom, Mak, falls into a supernatural coma, his bride has to rescue him from his fate by exhuming Mae Nak’s corpse.
In Thailand, Mae Nak is a hugely popular myth. She was a woman who died during childbirth a hundred years ago. But she refuses to accept her death and seeks to be reunited with her husband, but causes horrific deaths on anyone who dares to stop her. Some people have believed it to be a true story, but its perennial appeal has inspired some 20 films already, including one of the country’s biggest grossing movies, Nang Nak.
UK-based director Mark Duffield uses state-of-the-arts special effects and brings an added dimension of horror to this new interpretation of the legendary ghost story, tinged with romance and redemption. Financed by Thai production company, this is the first Thai language films written and directed by a Westerner. Ghost of Mae Nak is set to bring supernatural chills into your home.
