  Petrov's Flu [read more]
Now for the hard of hearing
SOVEREIGN is pleased to announce it has partnered with MATCHBOX CINE to produce an online panel discussion on Sovereign's current release, the hallucinatory sci-fi drama PETROV'S FLU, for which Matchbox provided descriptive subtitles. Controversial Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov's Cannes prize-winner was released in UK cinemas this month.

The panel, hosted by Charlotte Little (access consultant, subtitle user), includes Sean Welsh (subtitler), William Mager (deaf filmmaker) and Ted Evans (writer/ director), who discuss the process of creating subtitles for deaf and hard of hearing audiences for PETROV'S FLU, and improving access for deaf and hard of hearing audiences to arthouse cinema. Follow the link above to view the discussion.

A deadpan, hallucinatory romp through post-Soviet Russia, PETROV'S FLU details a surreal and fantastic day in the life of a comic book artist and his family. It won the prestigious CTS Artist award at this year's Cannes Film festival, for Vladislav Opelyants' virtuoso cinematography and was nominated for the Palme d'Or. The film was also selected to play in the ‘Dare’ section of last year's BFI London Film Festival. It was released with the support of the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery in order to bring this project to more audiences across the UK.

Director Serebrennikov wrote PETROV'S FLU while he was under house arrest in Russia. The result is a very crazy, very Russian and an extremely violent and unique experience that is in turns shocking and disturbing, explicit, touching and visually stunning, appealing to fans of everything from sci-fi, action to provocative arthouse. A weird, wild ride into a dark night of the soul, featuring random acts of insanity, aliens, erotically-charged demonic librarians, a pair of singing dentures and the perils of public transport - imagine Terry Gilliam and Gasper Noe collaborating to update a Gogol short story and you’re halfway there.
