Prolific character actor Darren McGavin has died of natural causes aged 83. After experience at New York's Actor's Studio, he broke into films and television, memorably in The Man with the Golden Arm, and never looked back. With well over a hundred TV credits, his most celebrated role among cult fans was as Carl Kolchak in the TV movies The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler, and the subsequent series which directly influenced The X Files (his last role was on the show). Other films included Airport 77, Hangar 18, A Christmas Story (as the father with the lamp), The Natural, Dead Heat, Blood and Concrete and Billy Madison. |
