Don Knotts, whose comically nervous, jumpy persona saw him through decades of popularity on film and television, has died. Starting as a ventriloquist, he broke into radio and later TV, first in a soap and then as part of Steve Allen's show where his talents were honed. It's as Deputy Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show that he will possibly be best remembered, along with Three's Company in the 70s and 80s, but he had a career in film too, with movies like The Incredible Mr Limpet, The Reluctant Astronaut, The Shakiest Gun in the West, The Ghost and Mr Chicken and The Love God? In the 70s he appeared in Disney works like The Apple Dumpling Gang and Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo, and later he was in Pleasantville (as the TV repairman) and Chicken Little (as the voice of the mayor). |
