Since 1998, BBC Audiobooks made it their misson to restore and narrate for audio every Doctor Who episode lost from television archives. It is 42 years since William Hartnell’s Doctor hit our screens and the words TARDIS and Dalek became part of our vocabulary. Due to the transitory nature of television in the 1960s and the expense of videotape, many programmes were wiped after transmission in order to reuse the tape. This resulted in over 150 original Doctor Who episodes being erased forever.
However, all was not lost. Since the first programme, the Doctor and his fascinating adventures garnered a wealth of fans that recorded the soundtrack for later enjoyment. The Reign of Terror is the last of these ‘lost’ episodes.
The Reign of Terror is a six-part serial from 1964, starring William Hartnell, William Russell, Jaqueline Hill and Carole Ann Ford.
Carole Ann Ford, who played Susan in the original series, provides linking narration. In a short bonus interview she recalls the time she spent working on the programme.
