Plainspoken, witty and always a welcome presence in her films, actress Shelley Winters has died after a period of ill health. Her career success started as a leading lady in such films as A Double Life, Cry of the City, Winchester '73, A Place in the Sun, Night of the Hunter and The Big Knife and then she turned character actress, winning her first Oscar for The Diary of Anne Frank, then Lolita, A Patch of Blue (which secured her her second Oscar), Harper, Alfie, Wild in the Streets, Bloody Mama, What's the Matter with Helen?, The Poseidon Adventure, Cleopatra Jones, Pete's Dragon, S.O.B. and Heavy. Frequently dying in her films, she was also a friend of Marilyn Monroe and wrote several revealing books about her own life and love affairs. |
