The death of Hammer icon and genre star Barbara Shelley has been announced today, a victim of coronavirus. She began her career as a model until she won roles in Italian films, then graduated to British pictures, and it was as the title character in Cat Girl that she started to establish herself as a horror star with such fare as Blood of the Vampire, Village of the Damned, The Shadow of the Cat, The Gorgon, Dracula Prince of Darkness, Rasputin the Mad Monk, Quatermass and the Pit and Ghost Story, among many television appearances. Always adding a touch of class to her roles, she had a habit of getting possessed in the horror movies that made her all the more captivating. She also showed up in the likes of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Avengers, Blake's 7 and Doctor Who on television, and you could not have hoped for a better ambassador for vintage British horror. |
