Mathieu Malinski is from the wrong side of the tracks, hiding a secret talent as a pianist.
But when a petty burglary lands him on the wrong side of the law, the National Music Conservatory's director Pierre Geithner gets him out in exchange for community service. Pierre uses the opportunity to sign Mathieu up to a national piano competition.
As Mathieu enters a new world, with codes and etiquette he does not know, he is taught by an uncompromising teacher, the Countess, who must overcome her own prejudices if they are to succeed at the competition.
