The World Premiere of a brand-new feature film and live score The Earth Asleep, has been announced today. It will take place on Saturday 18th April at the international arts centre HOME, Manchester.
The Earth Asleep will then play select performances across the UK, including Barbican Cinema (3rd May) and the Tyneside Cinema (6th May). On Friday 11th March 2011, one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded took place 18 miles from the Oshika Peninsula of Japan triggering a massive tsunami that killed over ten thousand people. Visual artist Clara Casian and composer Robin Richards travelled to the village of Otsuchi in remote North-East Japan to observe the experiences of local residents seeking to rebuild their lives and tend to the memories of those they have lost.
The Earth Asleep (2020) addresses the ways in which our exposure to extreme live-trauma in the form of rolling news and citizen reportage has resulted in an inability to process grief at a manageable, human scale. Film, poetry and live music intertwine to conjure a pathway by which the human soul might navigate unseen astral dimensions. As the earth sleeps, past and present merge in this live rhythmic montage.
