José Mojica Marins, who pioneered the horror genre in his native Brazil in the face of censorship and a restrictive regime, has passed away, it has been announced. He was best known for his Coffin Joe character, a top-hatted, claw-fingernailed, black-clad instigator of Satanic evil, a role he revelled in for decades of outlandish shockers, starting with At Midnight I Will Possess Your Soul in 1963. Other hits in his homeland which became cult movies abroad included This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse, The Strange World of Coffin Joe, Awakening of the Beast, Hellish Flesh, Hallucinations of a Deranged Mind and his 2008 comeback effort, Embodiment of Evil, among many others. One of a kind and all the better for it, he will be fondly remembered by horror fans with a taste for the outré. |
