The death of Peter Mayhew has been announced, he was best known around the world for playing Chewbacca in the Star Wars series, a role he held from the original in 1977 through two sequels in the 1980s, a reprise for Revenge of the Sith in 2005, and his final effort in the franchise, The Force Awakens in 2015, before he bowed out. As the co-pilot of the millennium Falcon, he was the best friend Han Solo ever had, and his loyalty made Chewbacca one of the most beloved characters in science fiction, something Mayhew was always grateful for. Away from Star Wars he appeared in occasional films like Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger and children's fantasy serial Dark towers, but for generations, he will always be Chewbacca. |
