The death of director Agnes Varda was announced today; she had been suffering from cancer. Her film career started in the 1950s, but it was in the 60s and Cleo from 5 to 7 that she commanded attention, and went on to a variety of fiction and documentary features. Other notable work included Le Bonheur, One Sings, the Other Doesn't, Vagabond, The Gleaners and I, and the Oscar-nominated Faces Places. One of the most wonderfully humane filmmakers of her or any other generation, she was a pioneer of women in film as well as being one of the medium's real personalities.
