MUBI is proud to accompany the first-ever complete UK retrospective of one of the most important filmmaking partnerships, the husband and wife team of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, with the first-ever online retrospective of their radical works! Since their debut, MACHORKA-MUFF (1962), this duo has carved their own path through cinema, making fiercely confrontational films against capitalism, oppression, fascism, and historical amnesia.
Basing their films on great works of art, yet rooting their adaptations in moments of post-war European history, the duo's range encompasses Bach (CHRONICLE OF ANNA MAGDALENA BACH, 1967), Heinrich Böll (NOT RECONCILED, 1965), Corneille (EYES DO NOT WANT TO CLOSE AT ALL TIMES OR PERHAPS ONE DAY ROME WILL PERMIT HERSELF TO CHOOSE IN HER TURN, 1969), Brecht (HISTORY LESSONS, 1972) Pavese (FROM THE CLOUD TO THE RESISTANCE, 1978), and Schoenberg (MOSES AND AARON, 1974).
MUBI's 7-month long, 14-film retrospective will be presenting these essential works in their newly restored versions. |
