When her mother-in-law Erica Thomas died in 2004, May discovered a vast archive of material to sift through, revealing more about the woman she didn't know than the woman she did. The film pieces together the story of Erica's and her Hungarian family's flight to England on the eve of WW2. It also traces their links to post-war espionage as well as her own involvement in covert British scientific experiments during the Cold War.
With a combination of documentary and poetic imagination, May creates an extraordinary portrait of a woman who hid a complex past. In Voyageuse she uncovers dark secrets, long-held familial resentments and the joys and sorrows of a career forfeited when Erica finally fell in love.
