Coalwood, West Virginia, 1957 - high schooler Homer Hickham Jr. (Jake Gyllenhaal) feels he may be doomed to a life down the pit until he sees the Soviet satellite Sputnik streak overhead and is inspired to reach for the stars in Joe Johnston’s October Sky, a true story of hope, determination and triumph. With the help of his teacher (Laura Dern) and three buddies, Homer sets about building his own rocket, overcoming seeming impossible obstacles; poor education, a disapproving father (Chris Cooper) and the various misfires that come with building your own rocket.
