July 11th sees the release of King Lear, the stage-to-screen film of the Royal Exchange Theatre and Talawa Theatre company's epic production, starring Don Warrington.
It’s a free groundbreaking, multi-platform release and will be available on-demand through the BBC in the UK and internationally as part of the BBC/ British Council Shakespeare Lives digital festival for three months online at bbc.co.uk/shakespearelives.
You can view the trailer above. The film covers a wealth of topics, importantly addressing the impact of Dementia on family bonds and decision-making. Also, the casting of King Lear’s family as black reminds us that the presence and influence of black people is potentially un-documented in our ancient history, whilst also addressing the debate about the lack of availability of roles for black actors in the UK.
