The death of Bud Spencer, the brawling, bushy-bearded heavy who made his name in international smash hit comedy Spaghetti Westerns, was announced today; he was 86. A true renaissance man, born Carlo Pedersoli he began as an Olympic-level swimmer and law student until he turned to acting, his huge frame winning him extra work before producers took a chance on him to deliver lines. His big break came with God Forgives... I Don't! and continued with such titles as Today We Kill, Tomorrow We Die, Ace High, The Five Man Army, They Call Me Trinity (a global blockbuster), Trinity is Still My Name, Four Flies on Grey Velvet, All the Way Boys, the Flatfoot series of cop thrillers, The Sheriff and the Satellite Kid, Banana Joe, and so on until he settled in television, along with an aborted attempt at politics in his later years. He would occasionally write scripts too, and was often paired with his screen buddy Terence Hill in many of his biggest movies. |
