Mike Nichols, the German-born director in America who achieved entry to the exclusive EGOT club - winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony - died today, it was announced. He was part of a successful comedy act with Elaine May, also a director, then turned to theatre and film, helming sharply observed dramas and comedies like Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Graduate, Catch-22 and the controversial Carnal Knowledge.
After the flop Day of the Dolphin, his output became patchier, but The Fortune, Silkwood, Biloxi Blues, Working Girl, Postcards from the Edge, Wolf and Charlie Wilson's War all have their merits and indeed fans, many of his works winning a cult following even if they were originally intended as blockbusters. On television, he directed the award-winning miniseries Angels in America and on the stage he originated Monty Python musical Spamalot. |
