The death of Bob Hoskins, a star who straddled both mainstream and cult acclaim, was announced today. He had been suffering from Parkinson's Disease and pneumonia. His career had taken off on television back in the seventies, particularly his starring role in Dennis Potter's classic serial Pennies from Heaven, and this swiftly translated into film.
It was his performance in gangster favourite The Long Good Friday that proved the diminutive actor was big enough to fill a cinema screen, and was followed by a selection of supporting and starring roles in such films as diverse as Pink Floyd The Wall, The Cotton Club, Terry Gilliam's classic Brazil, Mona Lisa (which rightfully saw him Oscar-nominated), blockbuster Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Steven Spielberg's Hook, Mermaids (as Cher's love interest), Super Mario Bros. (which he hated), Nixon (as J. Edgar Hoover), Shane Meadows' 24 7, Felicia's Journey, Unleashed, Mrs Henderson Presents, sci-fi epic Doomsday, Made in Dagenham and his last appearance in fantasy Snow White and the Huntsman. One of a kind, he will be missed. |
