At the least surprise-filled Academy Awards for a very long time, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King scooped a massive 11 Oscars, winning in every catagory it was nominated for, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Elsewhere Sean Penn won Best Actor for Mystic River, Charlize Theron got Best Actress for Monster, while Best Supporting Actor and Actress went to Tim Robbins (Mystic River) and Renée Zellweger (Cold Mountain).
