One of the last iconic actresses of Hammer Horror, Ingrid Pitt, died today at the age of 73, it has been announced. After a tough childhood during the war in her native Poland, she aspired to be an actress, first on the stage and then in film and television. After a decade of small roles, including one in Where Eagles Dare, she became a star in her own right with the 1970s horror movies The Vampire Lovers, Countess Dracula, The House That Dripped Blood and The Wicker Man.
These established an image, often sexually charged, that she did her best to live up to for the rest of her career, appearing in two Doctor Who stories, weirdo "event" miniseries Artemis 81, SAS clunker Who Dares Wins, and Clive Barker adaptation Underworld. Also a prolific writer, one of her last acting jobs was in the revived Hammer video project Beyond the Rave. She was a true personality and a fan favourite who will be missed. |
