Edward Woodward, the British star character actor, has died in hospital of pneumonia, it was announced yesterday. Although he worked extensively on television, with the role of hitman Callan the one which won him renown and The Equaliser continuing that success in the eighties, on film it is the classic horror The Wicker Man he will always be remembered for, and his superb portrayal of the policeman hero whose investigation leads to terror. Also on film he appeared in a big screen version of Callan, Breaker Morant, The Appointment, Who Dares Wins and most recently Hot Fuzz. |
