Released in cinemas on the 23rd October, the film is a provocative mix of investigative journalism, eco-adventure and arresting imagery that will inevitably haunt you long after you leave the cinema.
Directed by Louie Psihoyos, a photographer and first time filmmaker, The Cove follows former dolphin trainer Ric O’Barry, who captured and trained the 5 dolphins who played the title character in the television series ‘Flipper’, as he tries to find redemption for his actions. His journey takes him to Taiji, Japan where he discovers that the fishermen of the province, driven by a multi-billion dollar dolphin entertainment industry and an underhanded market for mercury-tainted dolphin meat, engage in an unseen and horrific hunt.
The nature of what they do is chilling -- and the consequences dangerous to human health – the local authorities will go to great lengths to halt anyone from seeing it. Joining forces with Psihoyos, the Oceanic Preservation Society and a crack team of underwater experts, O’Barry strives to expose the truth of what is really going on in the cove and why it matters to everyone in the world.
