Film star Patrick Swayze has succumbed to the cancer he had been fighting for two years, it was announced today. He trained as a dancer, but broke into movies with attention-grabbing roles in such efforts as Skate Town USA, The Outsiders, which featured many future stars, and Red Dawn. It was the miniseries North and South and especially the film Dirty Dancing that established him as a box office draw, and he went onto cult status as the lead in such favourites as Road House, Ghost and Point Break, proving his ability to appeal to both sexes in his choice of roles. Later works included Donnie Darko, a character part which also displayed his skill.
