Karl Malden, the reliable star character actor who won an Oscar for his supporting performance in A Streetcar Named Desire, has died, nearly reaching his hundredth birthday. He was discovered by director Elia Kazan, and was cast in small roles in the forties which led to more substantial ones in the fifties, including The Gunfighter, Where the Sidewalk Ends, Ruby Gentry, Alfred Hitchcock's I Confess, Phantom of the Rue Morgue, and Kazan's On The Waterfront and Baby Doll. Later films included Pollyanna, One-Eyed Jacks, The Birdman of Alcatraz, Gypsy, Dead Ringer, The Cincinatti Kid, Billion Dollar Brain, Patton and Dario Argento's Cat o' Nine Tails. He also had great success on television with a lead role in The Streets of San Francisco. He continued working right into his nineties. |
