The great cult star Patrick McGoohan died yesterday after a short illness, it has been announced. His most famous role was on television as the enigmatic secret agent Number 6 in The Prisoner, a sensation when first aired and still much discussed today. It was his role in the previous series, Danger Man, which made him a star, but as well as the small screen he appeared in notable big screen efforts as well.
These included gritty favourite Hell Drivers, Howard Hughes fave Ice Station Zebra, a fine villain in Silver Streak, a prison warden in Escape from Alcatraz, the doctor in Scanners, Edward I in Braveheart and his final role, voicing a character in Treasure Planet. He was also notable for his turns on Columbo, a fine adversary for Peter Falk, and directing Catch My Soul, a Shakespearean musical. Be seeing you. |
