Isaac Hayes, the man who revolutionised soul music and wrote the world famous theme to Shaft, died yesterday at his home. A writer for the Stax label in the sixties, his Hot Buttered Soul album was a groundbreaking work with its four epic tracks and Hayes followed it with a collection of similarly electrifying LPs. He wanted to play Shaft as well as perform its score, but was content to play the lead in Truck Turner, which some regard as more entertaining. He would go on to act in the likes of Escape from New York, spoof I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, Posse, Robin Hood: Men in Tights and Hustle & Flow. In later years, he became as well known for the voice of Chef in South Park as he was for his music.
