Much-respected filmmaker Sydney Pollack has died, it has been announced; he had been suffering from cancer. Working with the biggest stars of his day, his directorial career was marked by huge successes from the sixties to through to the nineties, including They Shoot Horses Don't They?, The Way We Were, Three Days of the Condor, Tootsie, multi-Oscar winning Out of Africa and The Firm. Cult movies he directed included odd war drama Castle Keep, snowbound western Jeremiah Johnson, and thriller The Yakuza.
