After viewing the movie upon it’s original French theatrical release, the then French President Jacques Chirac was so moved that he immediately raised the pensions of thousands of veteran soldiers from former French colonies to the same level as their national peers. Inspired by this success, British Gurkha soldiers used the UK release as a platform to successfully campaign for equal pensions compared with their British counterparts.
