Maila Nurmi, otherwise known as the iconic star Vampira, passed away aged 86 on January the 10th. Her fame stemmed from two reasons: she was the first television horror hostess during the 1950s, paving the way for many others, including Elvira (who Nurmi sued for ripping off her act); and she was one of the stars of Edward D. Wood Jr's cult classic Plan 9 from Outer Space. She refused to speak the dialogue, but her appearance as a ghoul secured her place in the hearts of bad movie fans throughout the world. She was also a friend of Marilyn Monroe and James Dean and appeared in The Beat Generation and Sex Kittens Go To College.
