Review: Following his victory over The Kurgan Connor MacLeod is living a normal life with his adopted son. But an archaeological dig releases evil immortal Kane, buried alive for 400 years he has MacLeod's head in his sights.

Highlander II isn't very good in its original or director's cut version, so for this follow up it was wisely decided to just ignore it and have events take place prior to all that nonsense about aliens. Sadly this third adventure simply copies the original. Is it discourteous to complain considering the mess that resulted from the first sequel's tinkering with the concept? Not really as this is a lazily scripted film often content to recreate scenes from Highlander; grunting villain Kane, himself a poor imitation of The Kurgan, stays at a brothel with all that entails and goes for a crazy car ride with an unwitting passenger.

Highlander 3 offers a cheap uninspired mix of historical flashbacks, training montages and sword fights and is a pretty slapdash offering – dolly tracks are visible on more than one occasion. The addition of an immortal with magical powers during the historical prologue is promising but sadly doesn't deliver and even Christopher Lambert appears to be bored most of the time. There's a nice scene with MacLeod returning to his highland home to forge a new sword and there's some Red Shoe Diaries style softcore love making with Deborah Kara Unger but apart from that, don't bother.

Christopher seemed pretty enthusiastic about this reboot/sequel in the interview I read at the time, "Forget all that planet crap in part 2" quoth he, but in the end Van Peebles was the only one having fun with it, such as it was.
