Brave New World: An In Person Tribute to Ken Russell [read more]
  Meet Ken!
Director Ken Russell has long been one of England's most iconoclastic, provocative and visually (and aurally) stunning directors. He first made a name for himself at the BBC, where he inaugurated a series of unconventional biopics of composers - a form he would continue to explore on the big screen. His breakthrough came in 1969 with the feature film adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's WOMEN IN LOVE, a taboo-shattering classic that garnered Russell an Oscar nomination. From that point on he embarked on one audacious masterpiece after another, including a rock opera with The Who (TOMMY), a science fiction head trip (ALTERED STATES) and more unorthodox treatments of composers' lives (LISZTOMANIA, MAHLER).

Join us at the Cinematheque for these films, as well as the beloved yet controversial horror film THE DEVILS, on the big screen as they were meant to be experienced! We are thrilled to welcome BAFTA and Academy Award-nominated Ken Russell to the Aero and Egyptian Theatres! Be ready for an unforgettable weekend!

Mega Shark In Malibu on DVD
You keep watching 'em, they'll keep making 'em
Snapping hot on the heels of MEGA PIRANHA comes MEGA SHARK IN MALIBU…

The peaceful Malibu seas are about to turn blood red when an undersea tremor releases six bone-armoured goblin sharks from their subterranean prison.

As a tsunami, spotted off the California coast, fast approaches, it soon becomes crystal clear that no where is safe from the razor-sharp teeth of the deadly creatures.

Trapped in their lifeguard station, lifeguards Doug, Heather and Barb along with knockout new arrival Jenny find themselves up to their necks in water fighting for survival.

Will the predictably good-looking cast live to bronze another day or will they be left as chum by the hungry prehistoric predators?

DVD Release date: 20th September 2010.

  A Zed & Two Noughts on Blu-ray
  HD decompose-o-vision
British director Peter Greenaway followed his international arthouse hit The Draughtsman’s Contract with A Zed & Two Noughts (1985). On 23 August this extraordinary tale of obsession is released by the BFI in a new High Definition transfer on Blu-ray and includes a full feature commentary with the director.

A car collides with a swan outside a zoo. Two women passengers die but the driver, Alba Bewick survives with a leg amputation. Obsessed with the accident, the zoologist husbands of the dead women – twins Oliver and Oswald – become fascinated by the processes of decay and embark on an affair with the amputee. As dead animals decompose to the playful rhythms of Michael Nyman, symmetry is elevated beyond obsession, and Sascha Vierny’s cinematography pays homage to Vermeer.

Full of surprises and magnificent conundrums, Peter Greenaway’s third feature is as perversely comic and teasing as it is shocking.

This Blu-ray release also includes a Peter Greenaway short, The Sea in Their Blood (1983), a rarely seen COI film exploring Britain’s coastline, with music by Michael Nyman.

The Edge of the World on Blu-ray
  Early Michael Powell
A powerful story of love, rivalry and survival against the harsh elemental realities of island life and an ever-encroaching modernity, Michael Powell's The Edge of the World (1937) is released on Blu-ray format on 23 August by the BFI.

Produced from a new High Definition master overseen and approved by Michael Powell’s widow, award-winning editor Thelma Schoonmaker-Powell, the Blu-ray contains all the numerous special features included on the previously released DVD version, plus additional scenes and the original trailer. Among the many extras is a full feature commentary by Thelma Schoonmaker-Powell and Professor Ian Christie, with extracts from Powell’s book about the making of the film read by Daniel Day-Lewis.

Shot over four arduous months in the wild, windswept Shetland Islands, The Edge of the World was legendary British director Michael Powell's first independent production and established the daring techniques and experimentation that would become familiar hallmarks of his career.
